What you need to know when buying a PC

When you are buying a PC, it is important to be aware that most sales people in retail stores are not as computer savvy as they pretend to be, all they want is to sell you a box and make a commission. Town Computer Advanced Technical Service offers free consulting to assist businesses and individuals when buying a new PC.

Buying a computer is like any project; you need to know what you are going to use the PC for. What do you need in your PC to perform a certain task? What can your budget afford? You don’t need to spend money on options that are not necessary. If you already have a DVD player, you don’t have to spend an extra $100 to buy a computer that has a DVD.

Suppose you plan to use your PC for graphic design or to play high-speed graphical games. You need a PC  that has at least 128 Megabytes and a fine graphic card that has its own memory board. It’s always good to make sure that the PC is upgradeable. An upgradeable PC must have at least one available bay in front of the chassis or case and at least one open PCI slot. If the graphic card is integrated in the board, in most cases, the graphic card will not be upgradeable.

If you plan to use your PC to run some word-processing or accounting software or to process data, there is no need to buy a PC that has a sophisticated graphic card and a lot of memory.

If you plan to buy a PC to use for business purposes or a specialized PC to perform a specific task a custom built PC is recommended. You can tell the PC maker what you need in your PC. The PC’s available in retail stores are designed for entertainment purposes; they come with many options that most business users do not necessarily need.

It is wise to buy a service plan for your PC. However, make sure to read the fine print before signing the contract. Never trust the superstore sales people, they make 25 to 30% on each service plan sold, they never tell you what is not covered by the service plan.
